The Albert Street branch of plumbing and heating merchant PTS (Plumbing Trade Supplies) has taken on Thomas Robertson as its first trainee from the TOiL (Training Opportunities in Lothian) programme.

Nineteen year old Thomas from Leith was chosen to undertake the 26 week placement at the PTS branch in Edinburgh to learn everything about the plumbing and heating trade, from counter service to warehouse skills. By completing the TOiL programme, Thomas will have an added advantage when it comes to finding work in an uncertain economic climate.
Trainee Thomas said: "I'm incredibly proud to be training with PTS as the company has such a good standing in the industry. I am being guided in everything from product knowledge and customer service to ordering, delivery and safety - all things which will provide the foundation for a successful career in this sector. Joining the TOiL programme has been very valuable to my work experience."

Mike Petrie, PTS Branch Manager Edinburgh, said: "PTS decided to enforce the TOiL programme because it's a great way of training young people and providing them with valuable skills about the trade. This in turn helps to qualify and prepare them for working in a practical environment. Thomas has picked up some essential skills very quickly and has shown a great willingness to learn."

TOiL is a work experience programme for young people keen to learn a new trade. In addition to practical skills and experience to give trainees a foot on the employment ladder it also offers on-site training, a wage, training courses and pre-apprenticeship testing.
